Hoplite

Plasma Hover added 2 years ago

Named after an ancient Greek shielded infantry unit, this bot lives up to its name using an asymmetrical design to have a powerful shield on one side, and powerful weapons on the other.

See the video below for a montage and a build tutorial :D \/\/

Cool, I made something similar long a go, but yours seems to have more fidelity in its movement, great work!

So the sword and shield tactic? i have to admit its a very unique idea... and it seems pretty damn effective. 10 out of 10 for that idea man. damn. who would have thought of that.

While the asymmetricity is killing me, aside from that however, this is a very nice bot from your video :) well done

Great invention you made.
I was skeptical at first too but after watching the video I think you do a good job of showing how you would use the bot in battle.
Anyway great job great video.

Now THIS is something new, I love the idea of using the electrplates on the side as a shield like someone would weild a sword and shield. It's brilliant!

No prob. I have a strange fascination with asymmetric builds, and seeing this as almost perfectly balanced, i wanted to give suggestions on making this the best asymmetric hover on this site

I did try many times to get this bot right, I think I got through three significantly different builds before I got to this one. It's not slow, it looks cool, it doesn't roll over at every opportunity. I'm sure there is still much more to improve upon on it and if you want to you can take the idea and make it even better, I have had enough of asymmetrical builds for the moment :P Thanks for having a look :D

Not at all, any of my builds are open to copying, improvement and other stuff :)

Its a nice idea, but not very well thought out. The electroplates area is wasted (only some of it protects the bot, the rest is just protecting air...) and in order to fire, the bot needs to show its exposed side so... the EPs are kinda pointless.

very nice one :)

Only problem is that the shields are so close that a ton of them keeps falling off with a single volley. The cubes supporting the electroplates are connected/not tiforced so damage to 1 EP would take out more because the damage spreads into the connecting blocks. Since the EP connections are connected on the connecting blocks, they all keep coming off in 1 hit.e of t

This dissapoints and ruins the whole conecpt of the T9 shield being the sponge because what is the point of having 8+ shields placed in such a way that they just end up to be easy food for plasmas

I suggest replacing the awkward t9 electroplates on the side and top with a much more armored and solid design, especially on the shield side

I have not taken a look at the tutorial so i will watch the tutorial and change my response if any changes are needed

Hmm, thanks for writing out such an in depth review of how I'm not too great at building asymmetrical bots yet :P Perhaps you can take the build further and make it into a block with ep on it.

I love it! Its Like your bot has a riot shield.

Excellent Job!

(might end up using this riot shield idea)

Nice bot man. The only downsides I see is that u have a hard time killing flying things as half of ur guns is under ur bot. And the fact that it seems to flip frequently. (I don't judge u for that, as all ver bots does...) and last, the inability to go straight at ur objective while having the shield facing the enemies.

Other than that I think this is a great concept and a good idea with a lot of potential. Keep making cool bots!

Constructive Points

Constructive points are what you get when other users mark your reviews (comment+ratings) as constructive.

When should you mark a review as constructive though?

If you answer yes to at least three of these questions you should definitely mark it as constructive; is the review..

  1. friendly?
  2. helpful?
  3. encouraging?
