Xenon - Plasma Copter In Memory of Kinesis
Thanks for coming back, hope you're all enjoying the festive season, today we'll be serving themed treats so please as always, grab a snack and take a load off whilst perusing my latest creation :)
The quick bit for those who prefer not to read on.
1) This was made with anger, every part is intricately connected to ensure damage propagation and consistent regen in the new engine (all other bots, getting overhauls as well)
2) Seriously agile, can climb as fast as bombers hits max speed fast, and can dogfight interceptors
3) Very tanky, can take 5-6 full volleys of plasma, 2-3 FULL clips of rails and still keep moving.
Okay so onto the longer part!
So I'm loving the update, there are so many things which need fixing but in general I'm definitely interested in the direction it's taking. Sure we'd like to have the seat back, and this ridiculous 25% before death etc but from a creative aspect things like the new shapes, fitting over aerorods, cosmetics have decent armour values now etc so it's not all bad.
However, I'm not gonna lie, I'm P****d!
My newest creation "Kinesis" part of my recent Copter platoon, the 3rd in the trio and one that was going to warrant it's own upload here on RCG for sure, was "disassembled".

But now, due to a helpful little bug in RC which we hope is now fixed (super paranoid it's not), Kinesis has been reduced to this here...
Lovely right? Just what I always wanted from Santa....
So yeah, I've submitted my support ticket, see if I can get it back, as it was before I'd had a chance to take all the images I need to rebuild if needed, but yeah, I'll say it again, I'm P****D! because there are no guarantees FJ will be able to restore it, and furthermore the 10 second regen mechanic means that although medics are useful for "in combat" healing, they are pretty much not as effective anymore, which is a shame.
So whilst I read the various forum posts of this bug, the beautiful creations that have been lost (Forbidden, Spacecam, etc I really really hope you guys get ya bots back as well!) and saw the pretty dire lack of support from, errr "support" and I got more and more angry, and instead of taking it out on FJ I decided to take it out on the other players and built this beast.
I knew how Kinesis "felt", I spend so much time with my bots I can almost memorise them block for block so I wanted to try to rebuild it but man, it was such a monumental task and with such completely limited resource to work from, I knew I just had to wait and just hope FJ can fix their sh*t :)
So this would be the reaper if you will, soullessly avenging the loss of a comrade before his time, a homage of pain perhaps hehe
This evil twin, delivers pain rather than healing it. For a true homage I've used very similar concepts to Kinesis, including utilising my own blend of rage cage, at the front (makes for awesome hitbox coverage and staggers where the damage propagates to), and from previous testing of Kinesis I'd also found some lovely optimal placements of thrusters which I then further developed for Xenon.
For example, I've got thrusters for turning, "whaaaaa, with the new rotors?" I hear you say, but yes, oh yes, use thrusters with your rotors and thank me later xD. I've placed them opposite corners, and they operate diagonally, so when turning right, the front left, and rear right thrusters turn. This was because no matter which corner of the bot I'm being shot at I always have the other sides of the bot working towards the direction I'm trying to turn.
Also I experimented with placing the turning thrusters lower, however I found that placing them higher up in the bot helped counter the increasingly awful COM assist and kept a much flatter profile when the bot rotated.
The one thing that was drilled into me was the need for up/down thrusters, you need up thrusters for 2 reasons, you need to be able to get above the enemy FIRST sometimes, a lot of aerial bots are susceptible to plasma from above and it makes dogfighting SMGs a lot easier. The other is for being able to hold a much higher hover height, and maintain the map ceiling with the bombers.
The reason for down thrusters is again for 2 reasons. You can pop behind cover much quicker, and it helps to again counter the COM assist when you're at the map ceiling, or just when bot collisions occur etc.
These thrusters have a core in the centre (really tightly squeezed) and are then spread out throughout the bot so they don't all die at once and likewise they can still be used to their fullest based on their placement.
Finally forward and backup thrusters for the obvious reasons, getting to top speed asap, extra mobility when rotors start dying and further counters to our lovely friend the COM assist.
After that was some serious testing, the gun mountings have changed several times with this bot, and the layout I have now seems to give great coverage to both ground, air, and targets above you, the rotors turn speed and thrusters mean you should never really not be able to face your targets. If you get snuck up on, it's your fault, NOT the bots :)
Ooo and one other thing I've been using a combination of the new blocks and increase armour values on the cosmetic items, dwarf spikes make a nice "semi-cage" for very little CPU (see pic of underneath) and the new sloped blocks make for a very nice tidy branching system for multiple connection points on rotors as they allow rods to pass over them, very noice :)
So I've really got my work cut out for me now, whole bunch of bots are updated with the colour livery I'm working on, all of those have been rebuilt to accommodate the new damage model (quite a few are now up on the CRF for you guys to check out) but I'm only about half way through, the removal of TX blocks and introduction of super light tetras etc, has meant in some cases I've got bots with 100's of spare CPU which I'm trying to use as best I can, happy joy fun hehe
